The Bravest Coward
The Red Flag suit is something violently visible and very real. It refuses to be disarmed or diminished, confronting the viewer and revealing the invisible flaws. The trauma and their associated bad behaviors become a “resplendent unidentifiable object”: a yeti, a sasquatch…. A monster. It is not ashamed of these banners, for they are part of being human and mark the endurance of adversity. To celebrate our humanity is to celebrate all of it - scars and all. The red flag persists as long as we refuse its confrontation… which has always at its core been an invitation to mutual recognition and reconciliation.
